Griz Football Head Coach Bobby Hauck was the inaugural guest on KGRZ's new show The Daily Drive With Ace Sauerwein. Coach Hauck, the Voice of the Griz Riley Corcoran and I spent about half an hour in his office Monday discussing his summer, his favorite Olympic sports, how he knows when his team has the right recruit and the question he gets asked the most during interviews.

Coach Hauck Summer Plans

Believe it or not, Bobby Hauck got to unwind this summer and spend some time with the family for a few days.

"We had a couple weeks off and for me that's family time. As my family's aged, along with me, they've become more fun to hang out with in summer on vacation so it's been great," joked Hauck.

Part of his summer has to be dedicated to some fishing, right? Maybe not as much as Coach Hauck would've wanted.

"I got two days is all," said Hauck. "Rob [His son & Griz legend Robby Hauck] and I got out and caught some fish. We had a good time."

Any parent knows how big of a commitment it is when their kid plays sports. It's no different for Coach Hauck, who's delved into volleyball.

"The sport that all my girls play is volleyball, which we love. It's just so fast-paced. It's just really a fun game to watch and I'm learning. I go into ask questions of our volleyball coaches because I don't know much about it but it's fun to watch."

Would Coach Hauck have excelled in volleyball?

"You know what, I actually think so."

Filling out the roster (Transfers vs. High School Students)

There's a way Griz Football goes about their day-to-day business. That's no surprise to anyone who follows the program, but there's a simple rule Coach Hauck's staff follows when they're on the transfer recruiting trail.

"I'm not being tried here when I say this but we recruit guys that fit. That's probably our number one criteria with the transfer guys we recruit. Transfer guys have to kind of be wired the way we work, because we have our way of doing things. We have our system, our process, and we try to recruit guys that we can get intel on from their coaches and different people who know them."

High school students receive a different approach.

"High school kids we feel like we can mold them."

Not that you needed me to say it, but Coach Hauck is locked in. To. The Max.

"At this point in the year, Riley, I really don't get up to that bird's eye view of things. I really don't get immersed in that much this time of year. I'm so in the dirt here. I got my hand in the dirt like the front guys, right? And I mean I'm worried about our releases on our punt coverage, and I'm worried about the right guard not getting to his fan lane and I'm worried about our back end not getting targeted right in kickoff return, I'm worried about not getting our split zone blocked well enough for our 3rd offensive line."
