The Grizzly Soccer program has its next head coach—former Troy Trojans Head Coach Stu Gore.
Ace: What were your first thoughts when you were officially given the title 'Griz Soccer Head Coach'?
Gore: It felt amazing. It's such a special place and a unique place and the fan base and everything. I couldn't wait to get up here.
Ace: Are you moved in?
Gore: You're on The Daily Drive [With Ace Sauerwein], I'm on my daily drive. Currently, I am in Oklahoma. I need one of those, you know, 'track the coach' things that [they use] in the Olympics for the Marathon runners.
Coach Gore has a unique backstory. He was born in England, played for Leeds United in the Champions League in the 90s, and eventually got into coaching.
Ace: What got you into coaching in the first place?
Gore: Funny enough, I retired from playing soccer. I came home to England and my sister had started the elementary school team because she wanted my nephew to have a few more friends. And she was like, here you go, you do it.
Coach Gore eventually made his way to the States to coach at Northwestern Ohio, a program he built from the ground up.
Ace: What was it like to start a program at Northwestern Ohio?
Gore: I remember I sat down at my desk, and I was petrified because I didn't know how to recruit college players. I had to build a team out of nothing. I didn't have any contacts because I think we did get a lot of foreigners, and everybody thinks because I'm foreign, I had loads of contacts, and that wasn't the case. We just worked really hard.
It took Gore and Northwestern Ohio just three seasons to reach the NAIA National Championship game, and four seasons to win the NAIA National Championship in 2016. After leaving NW Ohio, Gore spent three seasons at North Dakota before becoming head coach of Northwestern State from 2021-2022 and eventually Troy from 2023-2025.
