Missoula's Whitney Morrison Wins Big Sky Indoor Pentathlon

WARNING: DO NOT TRY A PENTATHLON AT HOME. YOU ARE OUT OF SHAPE AND HAVEN'T WORKED OUT LIKE A TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETE IN 20 YEARS.

Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Pentathlon winner: Whitney Morrison

Montana Grizzly Whitney Morrison won the 2025 Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Pentathlon last weekend in Flagstaff. Northern Arizona University sits at over 6800 feet above sea level, making it a slog to run there.

"Definitely, yeah," said Morrison when asked if she feels the burn more in Flagstaff. "I thought that was gonna be a PR race for sure and then I saw the time and it was far from it," joked Morrison.

Morrison, a Missoula native and Big Sky High School graduate, decided to return for a 5th season after a promising turn at the end of her senior year.

"I was finally starting to see some breakthroughs and right as the season was ending I was peaking and so I kind of wanted to continue that into my 5th year and see what I could do," said Morrison.

Part of the results Morrison was seeing was her times and scores but the other part was her body finally feeling right.

"Also just being healthy. Being able to get through a full season without injury was pretty cool to see and I wanted to see if I could do that again."

It paid off as Morrison captured the Pentathlon crown last weekend in Flagstaff. But it was no stroll in the park. The practice and meets take a toll on you, but the scariest part is...

NEEDLES!

"Our athletic trainer just got certified in needling, so I try to do that, like, twice a week," said Morrison.

Needling is exactly what it sounds like... You get small needles stabbed into your body like acupuncture.

Don't worry though. I asked Morrison if she takes cheat days yes. They're actually encouraged.
