Meet The New Montana Grizzlies Softball Head Coach
After the 2024 season, the University of Montana announced the softball program and Head Coach Melanie Meuchel parted ways. Meuchel was only the second head coach in Griz Softball history, so the ensuing job hunt was unfamiliar territory for Athletic Director Kent Haslam and his staff.
After Meuchel's resignation was announced in early May, the University took over a month to sift through its candidates and ensure the right coach was hired.
Griz Softball have their coach now: Stef Ewing
In a press release sent out by Grizzly Softball Sports Information Director Joel Carlson, Ewing was announced as the third head coach in Griz Softball history.
Welcome, Coach Ewing
Ewing spent six seasons as the Head Softball Coach at Cal State San Marcos (the Cougars) at the NCAA Division II level. Success was cultivated, especially in the latter half of her stint in San Marcos. In 2022, Ewing's club won 45 games and a California Collegiate Athletic Association Conference Championship. The most wins in a single season and the only conference title in program history.

Her first season in San Marcos registered just 14 wins in her inaugural season with the program. In her last three seasons, the Cougars produced campaigns of 45, 33 and 37 wins.
According to her profile on Cal State San Marcos' website, Ewing spent time as a Division I assistant coach at Butler in Indianapolis and New Mexico State in Las Cruces. An effective coach and an accomplished player at Oregon State University. Ewing made the All-PAC 10 (rest in peace) Freshman Team and an All-Pacific Region squad.
Everyone wishes Coach Ewing a happy move to Missoula. We can't wait to see what you do with the program.
