Some sports-related records stand for a long time. Others? Well, not so long.

Into the not-so-long category goes season ticket sales for University of Montana Grizzly football! UM Sports Information Director Eric Taber excitedly reported on Friday that for a second-straight year the Griz set a new football season ticket record at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, with 18,816 packages sold and distributed. And there could be a few more packages sold between and the home opener Saturday, August 31, vs. Missouri State.

As the winningest Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team of the 21st century, demand for Grizzly football is at an all-time high coming off the program’s 19th Big Sky Conference championship season and its eighth trip to the national title game. Without the added incentive of the Griz-Cat Brawl of the Wild game in Missoula this year, a very healthy 95 percent of last year’s season ticket holders renewed for this year’s seven game schedule, helping the Griz surpass 2023’s record of 18,761.

WHAT THE A.D. HAD TO SAY

UM Director of Athletics Kent Haslam was quoted in the Taber press release as saying, “We are again in awe of the support Griz Nation gives our student-athletes and coaches. We rely on that investment more than any other FCS program and more than many FBS programs across the country."

Montana sold-out all six of its regular season games last year and sold out the semifinal game against North Dakota State - the first playoff sellout in program history. The Griz also packed in more than 27,000 for the first time ever in 2023 with 27,178 in attendance to see the Griz beat Montana State 37-7.

Four of the five highest attended games ever in Missoula were set in 2023.
