The number 37 means a lot to the Grizzly Football program. Heck, it means a lot to the state of Montana as that's what it represents.

Number 37 has come to represent the Spirit of Montana... hard work, dedication to the team, and tough play on the gridiron. - gogriz.com

37 jerseys are reserved for Montanans only. Since the tradition began back in 1983, there have been 18 Grizzlies to don the special jersey. Those 18 players represent towns and cities from all over the state.

Here are the hometowns for every #37 at the University of Montana

  • Plentywood
  • Big Timber
  • Butte
  • Helena
  • Anaconda
  • Fort Benton
  • Deer Lodge
  • East Helena
  • Missoula
  • Malta
  • Stevensville
  • Townsend
  • Billings

The list features a couple of NFL players, the hearts and souls of many Grizzly teams and some of the all-time greats to put on the maroon and silver or copper and gold. It all started in 1983 with Kraig Paulson. Paulson dedicated 37 to Montanans and would pass "#37 on to a younger player who hailed from the state of Montana."

And a legacy was born.
