It has been a whirlwind of activity among the coaching ranks for the Montana Grizzly football team.

Recently, two defensive mainstays, Kent Baer and Barry Sacks retired from their coaching duties, after a combined 92 years of coaching experience between them. That led to Ronnie Bradford, UM's cornerbacks coach for the past two seasons, being promoted to defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Roger Cooper took the reins as linebackers coach, and defensive analyst Kim McCloud was moved up to the new coach of Grizzly cornerbacks.

If that made you dizzy, better grab a Dramamine and brace yourself for all the changes that were announced today (Thursday) for the personnel on the offensive side of the ball. Including a coach that came back, departed, and returned all in the span of 11 months.

WHO'S WHO AND WHAT WILL THEY DO?

University of Montana Sports Information Director Eric Taber tells us that head coach Bobby Hauck has announced that Griz alum and 27-year coaching veteran Brent Pease has been promoted to offensive coordinator, one of several shifting responsibilities among the Grizzly offensive coaching staff. Coach Pease who helped lead Montana to the national championship game and two Big Sky titles as UM's offensive coordinator from 1996 to 1998. In addition to offensive coordinator, he also returns to coaching the quarterbacks.

The now-former offensive coordinator, Timm Rosenbach, will now serve as the Grizzlies' senior offensive analyst and will assist in recruiting as the director of high school relations.

Bryce Erickson, UM's tight ends coach since 2019, will move over to coach wide receivers. That was Brent Pease's position group since returning to Montana five years ago.

Former Grizzly All-American center Chad Germer will now concentrate on coaching the interior offensive line (centers and guards).

WAIT, DIDN'T HE JUST...

It was about 7 weeks ago that Rob Phenicie stepped away from the Griz program, to accept an assistant coaching position at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania.   After serving as Montana's offensive analyst in 2022 and offensive coordinator from 2003-2009, he will be staying on at UM after all, and will coach the tight ends and tackles, in addition to serving as assistant head coach.

WHAT THE HEAD GUY HAS TO SAY ABOUT ALL THIS

On these personnel changes, head coach Bobby Hauck was quoted as saying, "We are shuffling some positions on our offensive staff and changing our approach to it. There will be some wholesale changes to how we're doing things. I think it's good to freshen up our approach and go in a little bit different direction.

"I'm excited about breaking up the offensive line piece and getting a more detailed look at those positions. All of these guys will do a great job."

The Griz are set to begin spring practice on March 1. And remember fans, the annual spring game returns to Missoula, set for Friday, April 7, in Washington-Grizzly Stadium at 6:00 p.m.
