After the massive storm that moved through Montana recently, there were thousands of households without power from the damage. My house was one of them. We didn't have power for a little over 3 days. That was enough time for some of our food to go bad. We spent our afternoon going through the refrigerator throwing out food that had spoiled, some of that food was lunchmeat.

Massive Lunchmeat Recall Expanded

There is a massive recall of lunchmeat sold in delis and stores across the country and in Montana, due to the possibility of a Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The USDA Food and Inspection Service is warning consumers about the situation. There was an initial recall announcement on July 26th, since then the recall has expanded to add an additional "approximately 7 million pounds of read-to-eat meat and poultry products."

The meats are intended for "slicing at delis as well as some packaged meat and poultry products sold at retail locations". Including the expansion there are 71 products that have been  "produced between May 10,2024, and July 29, 2024 under the Boar's Head and Old Country Brand Names". For a list of the products included in this recall you can see that here.  For a visual of the labels included in the recall, they are available here.

According to the CDC there have 2 deaths linked to the Listeria outbreak. None of them have been in Montana. Listeria is especially harmful to people over 65 or pregnant. Listeria can cause fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms contact your physician immediately.

The recommendations are to throw out the meats or contact stores for a refund. Keep the meat away from children or pets. Clean your refrigerator if any of the meat has come into contact with the surfaces to prevent cross-contamination.
