Three Montana Cities Get More Snow Than Most
Whenever I hear about a list that has Montana cities included in it, I always try to guess which cities have made the list. When the list includes weather it's interesting to me, since Montana is a state of extremes when discussing the weather.
Montana Cities Make "Snowiest Cities" List
Recently Angi.com published a list of the "Snowiest Cities in the United States" and two Montana cities made the list. There is a third Montana city that made the list of cities that have seen an increase in snow. Even though though this year the snowfall has been on the lighter side, we normally get more snow than a lot of other places. The two Montana towns that made the list for the "Snowiest Cities in the United States" are Billings and Missoula.
Looking At Average Snowfalls in Montana
Looking at the average snowfall across the country Montana's two cities made the top 25. The number one "Snowiest City" is Sault St. Marie, Michigan with an average snowfall of 90.0 inches.
- Billings, MT is ranked at #19 with 42.24 average inches of snowfall.
- Missoula, MT is ranked at #23 with 39.16 average inches of snowfall.
I was surprised not to see Whitefish or Bozeman on the list. In the report they also noted cities across the country that have seen an increase in snow percentages. Three Montana cities made that top 10 list of increase in snowfall and all made the top 5.
- Billings, MT is ranked 2nd with an 85.26% increase.
- Helena, MT is ranked 3rd with a 59.75% increase.
- Missoula, MT is ranked 4th with a 54.17% increase.
Pendleton, Oregon has seen the most increase in snow over the past few years, with a 96.46% increase in snowfall. The report used data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Centers for Environmental Information from 2016-2021. For the average increase in snow, they looked at the years between 1981-2010, and then the years between 2016-2021.
Even though we haven't seen much snow these days, we do have snow in the forecast, so maybe we will continue to see our averages increase when all is said and done.
