Montana college and university towns change when school is in session. That makes sense given the increase in students.
When campuses are busy so are the local bars. After all, when it comes to higher education, sometimes students need to blow off steam and find ways to relax.
Some schools are known for being “party” schools, while others may be known for their academics.
Given Montanans’ love for drinking, you might expect higher rankings in college party culture. You may be surprised to know that our schools don’t rank very high when it comes to being considered party schools.

Niche.com has come out with their list of the biggest party schools in the country. Their rankings are based on student reviews and nightlife statistics. So, which Montana school is the biggest party school?
Before we get to that, the biggest party school in the country is the University of California-Santa Barbara, followed by Florida State University, Tulane, USC, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, rounding out the top five.
Where Montana Colleges Rank Nationally
When it comes to party schools, Montana’s biggest is Montana State University, ranked 253 on the list. The University of Montana is 321 on the list.
Montana Tech’s Surprising Party Rank
There is another Montana school that ranked higher than U of M, and that is Montana Tech in Butte, 264 on the list.

We aren’t sure there needs to be any more fuel added to the U of M, MSU rivalry. But for now, MSU can hold the title of “biggest party school in Montana.”
