The popularity of Montana over the past few years hasn't really been up for debate. One of television's the most popular shows focuses on a fictionalized Montana, and has been but has also been filmed here, to show some of the beauty of our state. When the Covid pandemic hit, according to the numbers, Montana was the most popular destination for people looking to relocate.

We reported about how many high-earning households are moving to Montana. The number is higher than most other states. But that is a specific report and doesn't necessarily mean there are a lot of people still moving here. As far as trends go, Montana may be finally seeing a slow down on the amount of people who are moving here.

Montana's Numbers are Declining

According to Move Buddha, that studies moving trends, from 2020 to 2024 Montana has shown a decline in popularity. Both North and South Carolina are becoming the most popular destinations for people who are relocating. Idaho and Wyoming are both the most searched states for people who are looking to move. There are 34 states, including Montana, that have seen a decline in interest from people looking to relocate.

Montana Saw the Biggest Decline

One metric that stood out about Montana was with the "In-to-out ratio" table. From 2023 to mid-2024, Montana saw the highest drop of interest, more than any other state. Is this trend going to continue? Only time will tell. For now it looks like there are other states that are going be in the spotlight for a while. I can't wait for the next hit TV series based in Idaho or one of the Carolinas.
