Griz Football Coach Bobby Hauck On The State Of The Spring Game In 2025
For the first time since episode number 1, Montana Grizzly Head Coach Bobby Hauck is back on The Daily Drive with Ace Sauerwein.
Several universities are doing away with spring games entirely. Big teams like Auburn, LSU, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas and USC removed typical spring games in 2025. Some schools are replacing it with a fan event of sorts and others are removing them entirely.
Coach Hauck still enjoys spring football with a caveat.
"You know, I'm a little schizophrenic with spring ball in terms of player development," explained Hauck. "But I always kind of think the Spring Game is the worst practice of the Spring."
Hauck explained the Spring Game isn't as crisp as other springtime practices. Players' bodies are banged up more as it's the last day of the spring session.
From a fan perspective, Hauck enjoys putting the event on.
"We like seeing everybody. We get a pretty turnout. We get between 5 and 10 thousand people generally, and it's fun for us."
Plus, it benefits the University of Montana.
"The GSA sells it and raises scholarship money for all the other sports in the department."
Though there are some positives with the Spring Game, Hauck recognizes why some of the big-time schools are cancelling them.
"One, if they're a new staff, they don't want their stuff being shown on TV for the first opponent or the first couple of opponents to study in the offseason. The other part of it is they don't want people evaluating their young players when we've got another transfer portal window opening up next week," said Hauck.
Ah yes, the transfer portal again... changing college football every other day it feels like.
