Montana Grizzlies Fans Showed Up Big—Here’s When
Are you even a real Griz fan if you haven’t been to these stadiums? The University of Montana is home to four major venues: Washington-Grizzly Stadium, South Campus Stadium, Dahlberg Arena, and Grizzly Softball Field. Each has hosted some of the greatest moments in Griz history—but when did these places see their largest crowds?
Starting with Grizzly Softball Field, the newest of the four, which opened in 2015. On March 21, 2015, the Grizzlies hosted their first-ever home game, drawing 854 fans as they faced Idaho State. Despite the strong turnout, Montana fell 5–3.
Next is South Campus Stadium, home to Montana’s women’s soccer team. During the Big Sky Championship match against Weber State on November 9, 2025, a crowd of 2,227 fans showed up. The Grizzlies delivered a 1–0 victory, securing the Big Sky Championship.
Dahlberg Arena (formerly Adams Field House) is unique in that it hosts multiple programs, including the Lady Griz, men’s basketball, and women’s volleyball. This venue has seen some of the largest and most memorable crowds in Montana history.

The women’s volleyball team set a record attendance of 2,237 fans on September 23, 2023, during a rivalry matchup against Montana State in the Brawl of the Wild. The Grizzlies dominated, sweeping the Bobcats in three sets—something they hadn’t done since 2016.
For the Lady Griz, one of the most historic crowds came on March 20, 1988, when 8,709 fans packed Dahlberg Arena for an NCAA Tournament matchup against Stanford. The game ended in heartbreaking fashion, with Montana narrowly losing 74–72.
Turning to the men’s team, 9,540 fans filled what was then known as Adams Field House on February 28, 1981, for a Brawl of the Wild clash against Montana State. The Grizzlies came out on top with a 63–58 victory.
Finally, we come to what the University of Montana is best known for: Grizzlies football. Washington-Grizzly Stadium has hosted some of the largest crowds in school history. On November 22, 2025, an incredible 27,340 fans attended the 124th Brawl of the Wild matchup against Montana State. Unfortunately for the home crowd, the Grizzlies fell just short in a 31–28 loss.
From modest beginnings to packed stadiums, one thing is clear: Griz fans consistently show up. Whether it’s softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, or football, Montana’s support runs deep—and these record-breaking crowds prove it.
